COMMUNITY ADOPTS AN AMBULANCE STATION

A community project to repair and refurbish Wellington Free Ambulance's Upper Hutt Ambulance Station was launched in 2005.

Spearheaded by McArthur Real Estate, the project was a major upgrade which included re-roofing, re-painting and fixing windows on the 44 year old building.

"We just saw it as an opportunity to put resources into a project that will benefit them. After all it was a community project when the station was built in 1960-61. It also enables WFA to retain more funds for the running of their core business in FREE AMBULANCES."

A Charitable Trust was formed to oversee the project.

It was envisaged the project, costing approximately $100,000, would be completed in two stages - roofing being the fist priority.

Wellington Free Ambulance CEO John Britton was delighted with the initiative.

"This is great initiative by Mark McArthur and his team and we are very grateful"

Even though WFA receives outstanding support form the community, funding is always a challenge for them. Each year WFA have to cover a shortfall in government funding of over $2 million.

There are eight bases in the greater Wellington area, seven of which WFA has to maintain. Unfortunately several of these buldings are showing their age.

" Hopefully it will be a model we can use in other communities."

The project was completed within 13 months, well within the two year period allowed. This only shows the support given by the Upper Hutt community.

Because of the success of this project we continue to be closely associated with Wellington Free Ambulance
